The new developer rebooted the character along with the video game series by altering her physical proportions and giving her additional ways of interacting with game environments. American developer Crystal Dynamics took over the series after the 2003 sequel Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness was received poorly. The company modified the character for subsequent titles, which included graphical improvements and gameplay additions. Inspired by strong female icons, Gard designed Lara Croft to counter stereotypical female characters. Created by a team at British developer Core Design that included Toby Gard, the character first appeared in the video game Tomb Raider in 1996.Ĭore Design handled the initial development of the character and the series. She is presented as a highly intelligent and athletic British archaeologist who ventures into ancient tombs and hazardous ruins around the world. If someone is defined by their looks, that's a pretty shallow person, or the person defining them is pretty shallow.Lara Croft is a character and the main protagonist of the video game franchise Tomb Raider. I never understood why people who want women represented better focus so much on the attractiveness of a character, instead of their character traits, because it's the character traits which really define someone. I don't dislike the design of the new Lara, and if it were a real woman, I'd find it attractive, but her personality is really lacking compared to the old Lara, and I can't see how the new Lara can be considered as a strong character because she lacks confidence. Too bad they screwed that up with the new iterations though, because apparently, being attractive, sexy, confident, strong of character, and capable is just a complete misrepresentation of women, because no woman can possibly be all those things. I think the character herself has always been considered one of the "sexy" female gaming characters through the generations. Had good stories too, which many of the action platformers of the time were kind of lacking in favor of generic Mario type tropes. The fact it had good game play for it's time, and it was in a genre not fully explored yet, helped make it popular though. To be fair, there was quite the to-do about her being over sexified when the game first released, and the devs weren't oblivious to the sex sells factor.
